If you’re picking up this guide, chances are you may know some of the many benefits of landscaping with native plants: Native plants create the backbone of our local ecosystems. They feed the insects and pollinators that our birds, mammals and other critters depend upon for food and shelter. Native plants are climate resilience powerhouses. They use less water and help soil retain water, and their deep roots store carbon instead of releasing it to the atmosphere. Native plants help give us a sense of place, creating gardens that reflect the beauty unique to Colorado’s landscapes. Native plants are adapted to our harsh growing conditions and are likely to succeed here without extra water, fertilizer or pesticides that exotic imports- we’re talking to you, hydrangea- may need to survive.
